Feeding Myself
For the first time in my life, I have had to consistent find breakfast, lunch, and dinner for myself. Most of the time I've been cooking for myself with food from the local Co-op grocery store to save a little poundage (mostly the money kind). The markets around here are also fun to walk through to smell and sample all the homemade delicacies. I also found a cool little fruit stand near the LSE campus, where I have gotten some really sweet pears, crisp apples, and ripe bananas. I can't say I'm really cooking as most of the meals consist of cereal or porridge in the morning, a sandwich and fruit for lunch, and soup, salad, or pre-made meal for dinner, but I have made eggs and sausage and attempted a grilled cheese in the toaster (which kind of failed when I turned it vertical...). I have enjoyed eating out in London as well, trying the typical British foods like Fish and Chips and Bangers and Mash at the pubs you can find on every block. I tried the famous British Indian food (I guess thats like American Chinese food?) at the Tom Swartz-recommended Roti Chai. The chain restaurants are definitely different here as well. There are McDonalds, Chipotle and Starbucks around, but the most common restaurant is Garfunkels, a well-over priced family establishment, Tortilla is better than Chipotle, and cafés like Pret a Manger and Cafe Nero are everywhere. Standing in Trafalgar Square, you can actually see 3 Pret a Mangers at once. The free food is where its at though. I've gotten a free tube of butter and two pieces of pizza as giveaways on Strand, an ice cream with flake and a Magnum ice cream bar as promotions, and went to a Young Professional London meet up where you buy a drink and get unlimited italian food at Arancina! Speaking of Italian food, I can't wait to try real Italian pizza/pasta/gelato... in Roma next week. Overall, the food's been pretty good, but I have to say I am kind of looking forward to getting back to the Morse cafeteria!
